Caramelized Onion Sloppy Joe Recipe With Swiss Cheese

Ingredients

For the Caramelized Onions

Ingredients for the Caramelized Onions:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup dry purple wine (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

For the Sloppy Joes

1 pound floor beef

1 onion, chopped

3 tablespoons tomato sauce

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon yellow mustard

Salt and pepper to taste

6 hamburger buns

1/2 cup Swiss cheese, shredded (optional)

To make the caramelized onions:

Peel and slice 2 giant yellow onions.

Heat 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add the onions to the skillet and prepare dinner, stirring incessantly, till they are softened and starting to brown, about 15 minutes.

Reduce the warmth to low, add 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, and prepare dinner for an extra 15 minutes, or until the onions are deeply caramelized and very soft.

Scrape the bottom of the skillet to loosen any browned bits.

Remove the skillet from the warmth and set aside.

To Make the Sloppy Joes

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound floor beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 giant onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese

Instructions:

  1. Heat the olive oil in a big skillet over medium-high heat. Add the bottom beef and cook dinner, breaking it up into small pieces, till browned. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the onion to the skillet and cook, stirring often, until softened and golden brown, about 10 minutes.
  3. Stir within the brown sugar, ketchup, water, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook dinner until the sauce has thickened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Serve the sloppy Joes on hamburger buns topped with Swiss cheese.

To Assemble the Sandwich

  1. In a big skillet, brown floor beef over medium heat; drain off fats.
  2. Add onion and green pepper to skillet; cook dinner and stir till tender, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper; bring to a boil.
  4. Reduce heat and simmer recipe for sloppy joe sauce 10 minutes, or till sauce has thickened.
  5. Spoon a number of the mixture onto each bun backside.
  6. Top with cheese and bun tops.
  7. Serve immediately.
